What is Dragon Boat Festival?

The Dragon Boat Festival, or Duanwu Jie, is a traditional Chinese holiday that falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunisolar calendar. In 2024, the Dragon Boat Festival will fall on June 10th.

The festival is said to have originated over 2,000 years ago, and there are many different legends and stories about its origins. One popular legend tells the story of Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet who drowned himself in the Miluo River after being unjustly accused of treason. The people of his village raced out in boats to try to save him, but they were too late. In order to keep his spirit from being eaten by fish, they threw rice dumplings into the river.

How to Celebrate Dragon Boat Festival

There are many different ways to celebrate Dragon Boat Festival, including:

  • Eating zongzi, or rice dumplings
  • Watching dragon boat races
  • Hanging up mugwort and calamus leaves
  • Drinking realgar wine
  • Setting off firecrackers
